Ashèblasta is the artistic name with which Roberto Chiga combined his two great musical passions: the love for percussions and the frame drums and that for the turntable and sampling.
From these coordinates was born Ashèblasta, with the ambition to produce a sound that wants to bring ancient song, traditional sounds, obsessive rhythms of Salento and Apulia into the dance hall, making them “international” without sacrificing authenticity.
In his music, traditional Salento music meets hip-hop, percussion and frame drums, samplings of field recordings from the 1950s / 1960s and Salento productions from the 1990s with electronics and lyrics of young rappers.
The name Ashèblasta is an explicit reference to scèblasti, Salento bread (Roberto is the son of bakers), a mix of local ingredients, ancient flavors and modern street food; exactly the same formidable recipe that he proposes in his sound, strictly on vinyl, full of elements from world music to funk, from jazz to electronics, from soul to hip-hop; all influenced by ethnic contaminations that pass from the Balkan to the Middle East, up to the overseas swing.

A project that wants to project the musical tradition into the contemporary world by taking it to stages far from those traditionally linked to “folk” music; to tell the stories of today and produce a “new popular music”, in which to truly identify, which lives in the present and not only in the memories of grandparents and in the myth of a spider.

Roberto Chiga, aka Asheblasta was born as a percussionist, expert and passionate of the popular Salento frame drum, in particular of the most archaic ways and techniques that distinguish this instrument, assimilated through the experiences with traditional singers and players such as Pino Zimba and Uccio Aloisi , as well as with masters such as Pierangelo Colucci and Alfio Antico. He soon reaches his own technique that over time will allow him to combine traditional music with more modern ones, experiments that will lead him to important experiences, such as the collaboration with DJ Gruff, a pioneer of scratch and Hip Hop in Italy.
He approaches the frame drums of the Mediterranean basin, deepening their techniques with great masters Zohar Fresco. His predisposition to experimentation leads him to be present in many musical situations ranging from traditional music, baroque, songwriting, up to touching contemporary music. Flanked by Andrea Piccioni, Vincenzo Gagliani and Gian Michele Montanaro he founded the Tamburello Cafè, the first Italian percussion ensemble, with which he works to raise the tambourine to a more important status. He collaborates with Italian and international artists, participating in a large number of European and non-European festivals. Present in various musical ensemble and record productions, since 2015 he has been a tambourine player with the Orchestra della Notte della Taranta.

Ashèblasta è il nome d’arte con cui Roberto Chiga, ha unito le sue due grandi passioni musicali: l’amore per le percussioni e il tamburello salentino e quello per il giradischi e i campionamenti. Da queste coordinate nasce Ashèblasta, con l’ambizione di produrre un sound che vuole portare nelle dance hall il canto antico, i suoni tradizionali, i ritmi ossessivi del Salento e della Puglia rendendoli “internazionali” senza rinunciare all’autenticità.
Nella sua musica si incontra la musica tradizionale salentina con l’hip-hop, le percussioni suonate e il tamburello, i campionamenti delle registrazioni sul campo degli anni ‘50/’60 e delle produzioni salentine degli anni ’90 con l’elettronica e i testi di giovani rapper.

Il nome Ashèblasta è un esplicito riferimento alla scèblasti, “pizzo” salentino (Roberto è figlio di panificatorI), un mix di ingredienti del territorio, antichi sapori e street food moderno; esattamente la stessa formidabile ricetta che propone nel suo sound, rigorosamente in vinile, ricca di elementi dalla world music al funk, dal jazz all’elettronica, dal soul all’hip-hop; il tutto influenzato da contaminazioni etniche che passano dal Balkan al Medio Oriente, fino ad arrivare allo swing d’oltreoceano.
Un progetto che vuole proiettare nella contemporaneità la tradizione musicale portandola su palchi lontani da quelli tradizionalmente legati alla musica “folk”; per raccontare le storie di oggi e produrre una “nuova musica popolare”, in cui identificarsi realmente, che viva nel presente e non solo nei ricordi dei nonni e nel mito di un ragno. 

Roberto Chiga, aka Asheblasta nasce come percussionista, esperto e appassionato del tamburello popolare salentino, in particolare dei modi e delle tecniche più arcaiche che contraddistinguono questo strumento, assimilate attraverso le esperienze con cantori e suonatori tradizionali come Pino Zimba e Uccio Aloisi, nonché con maestri quali Pierangelo Colucci e Alfio Antico. Raggiunge presto una propria tecnica che nel tempo gli permetterà di affiancare musiche tradizionali a quelle più moderne, sperimentazioni che lo porteranno ad importanti esperienze, come la collaborazione con DJ Gruff, pioniere dello scratch e dell’Hip Hop in Italia.
Attraverso il tamburello si avvicina ai tamburi a cornice del bacino del Mediterraneo, approfondendone le tecniche con grandi maestri quali Zohar Fresco. La predisposizione alla sperimentazione lo porta ad essere presente in molteplici situazioni musicali che variano dalla musica tradizionale, barocca, cantautoriale, fino a toccare la musica contemporanea. Affiancato da Andrea Piccioni, Vincenzo Gagliani e Gian Michele Montanaro fonda i Tamburello Cafè, il primo ensemble di percussioni italiane, con il quale lavora per elevare il tamburello ad uno status più importante. Collabora con artisti italiani ed internazionali, partecipando ad un gran numero di Festival europei e non. Presente in diverse formazioni musical e produzioni discografiche, dal 2015 è tamburellista dell’Orchestra della Notte della Taranta.
