Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, born in 1975 by the writer Rina Durante, is the first and most important group to produce popular music from Salento (Apulia). The fascinating dichotomy between tradition and modernity characterizes the music of the CGS: the group reinterprets in a modern key the traditions that revolve around the famous pizzica tarantata ritual, which had the power to cure through music, trance, and dance the bite of the fearsome tarantula.

The CGS’s albums and performances are an explosion of energy, passion, rhythm, and magic, which captivate the audience and, through the beat of the tambourine, engage the public in a journey that goes from the past to the present of the culture of Salento.

CGS lists a great number of collaborations with renowned musicians such as Ludovico Einaudi, Piers Faccini, Ballake Sissoko, Ibrahim Maalouf, Fanfara Tirana, Stewart Copeland from Police, without never losing its identity which is always proudly present.

With 20 studio albums and numerous live performances in Italy (3 editions of the Notte della Taranta in Melpignano)– in Europe, in the Middle East, Australia, Japan and in the USA, the CGS is acclaimed by the public and the critic because of its ability to convey this ancient tradition and show it worldwide.

In 2018 the CGS received the Songlines Music Award as “Best group”, assigned for the first time to an Italian group. In 2014, their song “Sola Andata” – based on a text by Italian writer Erri De Luca – received the “Art and Human Rights Prize” by Amnesty International. In 2012 they took part in globalFEST in New York, during which the CGS was defined by The New York Times: «a whirlwind». That same year, CGS was the only Italian group at WOMEX Festival, the most important world music expo in the world. In 2010 the CGS received by MEI the prize as Best Italian Popular Music Group.

The formation of CGS is composed by Mauro Durante (vocals, percussions, violin), Alessia Tondo (vocals), Silvia Perrone (dance), Giulio Bianco (bagpipe, harmonica, flutes, bass), Massimiliano Morabito (organ), Emanuele Licci (vocals, guitar, bouzouki), Giancarlo Paglialunga (vocals, tamburieddhu) and continues to innovate and represent Italian traditional music all around the world.

L’affascinante dicotomia tra tradizione e modernità caratterizza la musica del CGS: il gruppo reinterpreta in chiave moderna le tradizioni che ruotano attorno alla celebre pizzica tarantata rituale, che aveva il potere di curare attraverso la musica, la trance e la danza il morso della temibile tarantola.

La formazione musicale è composta da Mauro Durante (voce, percussioni, violino), Alessia Tondo (voce), Silvia Perrone (danza), Giulio Bianco (zampogna, armonica, flauti e fiati popolari, basso), Massimiliano Morabito (organetto), Emanuele Licci (voce, chitarra, bouzouki), Giancarlo Paglialunga (voce, tamburieddhu) e continua ad innovare e rappresentare la musica italiana e salentina nel mondo.

Il CGS annovera collaborazioni con artisti di fama internazionale come Ludovico Einaudi, Piers Faccini, Ballake Sissoko, Ibrahim Maalouf, Fanfara Tirana, Stewart Copeland dei Police, senza perdere la propria identità, che anzi è sempre orgogliosamente presente.

Con 20 album all’attivo e innumerevoli spettacoli sia in Italia – degna di nota la partecipazione alle edizioni 2010, 2013 e 2015 della Notte della Taranta di Melpignano– che in Europa, Medio Oriente, Australia, Giappone e Stati Uniti, il CGS è acclamato da pubblico e critica perché portatore di una tradizione coinvolgente e antica, nonché della musica italiana, in tutto il mondo.

Nel 2010 riceve il premio come Miglior Gruppo Italiano di Musica Popolare dal MEI, nel 2012 partecipa al globalFEST a New York per cui viene definito dal New York Times: «a whirlwind», e nello stesso anno sono l’unico gruppo italiano selezionato al WOMEX Festival, la più importante fiera di world music (genere di contaminazione tra la musica popolare e musica tradizionale) al mondo.

Nel 2014 il CGS riceve il premio Arte e Diritti Umani da Amnesty International per il brano “Sola Andata” scritto su un testo dello scrittore italiano Erri De Luca e per cui è stato girato anche un videoclip da Alessandro Gassman.

Il 2018 è poi l’anno di un riconoscimento estremamente importante per il mondo della world music: si tratta dei Songlines Music Awards assegnato per la prima volta ad un gruppo italiano designando il CGS come miglior gruppo di world music al mondo.
